What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy is a highly effective physical modality originating in Europe, specifically Germany. Also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) or Focal Shockwave Therapy (FSWT), it utilizes mechanical sound waves, not electrical stimulation, to stimulate physiological changes within the body. These sound waves, similar to the sonic boom from an airplane, promote improved mobility and function of tissues and joints and reduce pain. Shockwave therapy also stimulates the body to heal itself.

How does Radial Shockwave Therapy work?

Shockwave therapy utilizes mechanical soundwaves that penetrate deep into the tissues, reaching up to 12 cm. These soundwaves stimulate various physiological changes within the body, leading to three main effects:

  1. Loosening of Scar Tissue and Adhesions: The soundwaves can effectively loosen scar tissue, adhesions, and muscles surrounding the joints. This process enhances circulation in existing blood vessels and improves the mobility of the joints and tissues.
  2. Promotion of Stem Cell Migration: Shockwaves can encourage stem cell migration to the area of treatment. Stem cells play a crucial role in the healing and regeneration of cells and tissues in the body.
  3. Stimulation of New Blood Vessel Growth: Shockwaves can also stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in the treatment area, promoting better circulation. Improved circulation is vital for the healing process in the body.

These physiological effects can result in a range of benefits, including decreased pain and inflammation, increased range of motion or mobility, and healing of the injured or painful area.

The Difference Between RPWT and FSWT

Not all “shockwave therapy” is shockwave therapy. Most clinics use Radial Pressure Wave Therapy (RPWT). This device does not produce an actual shockwave. It can still be effective for pain and dysfunction but is not as effective as actual shockwave therapy. At Sherwood Chiropractic Centre, our therapist uses both Radial Pressure Wave Therapy (RPWT) and “real” Focal Shockwave Therapy (FSWT).

The main features of RPWT are:

  • It can penetrate up to 4 cm into the tissues
  • Very effective in reducing muscle and fascia tightness
  • Loosen or break down scar tissue and adhesions
  • Improves circulation in existing blood vessels
  • Reduces inflammation and pain
  • Can feel like a deep massage or pulsation
  • Does not have to be painful to produce positive results

The main features of FSWT are:

  • It can penetrate up to 12 cm into the tissues
  • More effective in loosening or breaking down scar tissue and adhesions
  • Stimulates stem cell migration to the area of treatment
  • Stimulates growth of new blood vessels in the area of treatment
  • Promotes healing of tissues
  • Can feel like a deep ache, deep pressure or a “needling” sensation
  • Does not have to be painful to produce positive results

The Shockwave Device

The Shockwave device we use for Shockwave Therapy uses the same technology doctors use in hospitals to break up kidney stones (Lithotripsy). It is not the same device. Our device has been adapted for use in musculoskeletal and urological conditions.

What to expect during a Shockwave Therapy session:

Most musculoskeletal conditions require 3-5 treatments, usually one week apart. In many cases, improvements can be noticed after the first treatment. Occasionally, improvements are noticed gradually over time after the treatments are completed.

The Storz Medical group in Switzerland manufactures the devices used by our therapist. These devices are highly adjustable, allowing the strength of the treatment to be set to a comfortable level for almost all clients, even those who are highly sensitive or in acute or severe pain.
