What is Active Release Therapy (ART)?

Active Release Therapy, commonly known as ART, is a patented, state-of-the-art soft tissue system that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. It’s a hands-on approach to breaking up scar tissue and adhesions, restoring proper muscle function, and alleviating pain and discomfort.

How does ART work?

Active Release Techniques® (ART) is a highly effective soft tissue treatment method that precisely applies tension, movement, and pressure to affected areas.  Whether you’re experiencing specific discomfort or a general feeling of decreased performance, ART can help restore your body’s natural function and alleviate symptoms.

What to expect during an ART session:

Initial Assessment and Functional Testing

During your first session at Sherwood Chiropractic Centre, our practitioners will thoroughly assess your medical history and any pre-existing conditions that may affect your treatment. You’ll be asked to fill out a medical history form, providing valuable information to tailor your ART sessions to your needs.

Following the medical history review, we’ll interview to clarify medical history and identify specific focus areas for functional testing. Functional testing involves evaluating your range of motion (ROM) and overall body balance to pinpoint tension, restriction, or weakness areas.

Treatment Session

Once the assessment and functional testing are complete, the treatment session begins. Active Release Therapy (ART) involves hands-on manipulation of soft tissues, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia, to break down scar tissue, release adhesions, and restore proper function. Our certified ART practitioner uses precise techniques to target problems and promote healing.

Post-Treatment Evaluation

After the treatment session, another round of functional testing is performed to assess the immediate effects of the treatment. This evaluation helps verify the effectiveness of the ART session and guides any necessary adjustments in subsequent sessions.

Subsequent Sessions

Subsequent ART sessions follow a similar structure. Each session begins with a brief interview to discuss changes or progress since the last visit. Functional testing is then conducted to assess your body’s response and determine the focus areas for treatment. The treatment session follows, tailored to address your specific needs and goals.

What to Expect

ART sessions typically last 30 minutes and may involve strenuous movements and pressure on targeted areas. It is recommended to wear or bring comfortable clothing, such as sweatpants and t-shirts, to ensure ease of movement and access to treatment areas.

Conditions Treated
